Red Hot Chili Peppers - Monarchy of Roses - “Behind the Scenes”
All of us here at S77 had the amazing opportunity to work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers “Monarchy of Roses” video.
Check out some of the early style tests, as well as some of the animation loops created in the early stages of the video.
Behind the Scenes - Test 1
an early style test exploring the use of 3D animation
Behind the Scenes - Test 2
this was the first animation example sent to the director - Marc Klasfeld
Behind the Scenes - Test 3
we also explored a photo-realistic approach but decided to go with an illustrated look to further match Pettibon’s style
In the video, we employed the use of animation loops of Pettibon’s work that we made in Photoshop.
Here are some of those loops in glorious animated GIF format!

the train that started it all! this animation test put the world of Pettibon in motion

the headbanger was a staple of earlier animation, but wasn’t able to find a home in the final video

an early animation loop that ultimately landed on the cutting room floor
As an added bonus - check out this behind the scenes video of the band’s performance shot and edited by Warner Bros. Records video commissioner - Devin Sarno.
